Section on Responding to Sneezing – Permissibility of not responding to a sneezer who does not praise Allah
Hadith 600
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، وَجَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : عَطَسَ رَجُلانِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَشَمَّتَ أَوْ فَسَمَّتَّ أَحَدَهُمَا ، وَتَرَكَ الآخَرَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمْ يَحْمَدْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), two men sneezed. The Prophet replied to the sneeze of one of them and did not reply to the other. He said: This person praised Allah, and this person did not praise Allah.
