Hadith 599
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ هِلالِ بْنِ يَسَافٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ فِي غَزَاةٍ ، فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ ، فقَالَ : السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ، فقَالَ سَالِمٌ : السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ، فَوَجَدَ الرَّجُلُ فِي نَفْسِهِ ، فقَالَ لَهُ سَالِمٌ : كَأَنَّكَ وَجَدْتَ فِي نَفْسِكَ ؟ فقَالَ : مَا كُنْتُ أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَذْكُرَ أُمِّي بِخَيْرٍ وَلا بِشَرٍّ ، فقَالَ سَالِمٌ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ ، فقَالَ : السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ، فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ، إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ : الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ ، أَوْ قَالَ : الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ، وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ : يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ ، وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ : يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ " .
Hilal bin Yasaf narrates: I participated in a battle with Salim bin Ubaid. Among those present, a man sneezed and said: "As-salamu alaikum." So Salim said: "Peace be upon you and upon your mother as well." This man disliked it very much. Salim said to him: "Perhaps you disliked this." He replied: "I do not like that my mother be mentioned, whether with good or with bad." So Salim said: "We were on a journey with the Prophet (peace be upon him). A man sneezed and said: 'As-salamu alaikum.' So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Peace be upon you and upon your mother as well?' When a person sneezes, he should say: 'Alhamdulillah ala kulli hal' or 'Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen,' and the other person should reply with: 'Yarhamukallah,' and he should say in response: 'Yaghfirullahu lakum' (May Allah forgive you)."
