Chapter on Sitting on the Road
Hadith 595
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْجُلُوسَ فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ " ، قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا لَنَا مِنْ مَجْلِسِنَا بُدٌّ نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا ، قَالَ : " فَإِذَا أَبَيْتُمْ إِلا الْمَجْلِسَ ، فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ " ، قَالُوا : مَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ ؟ قَالَ : " غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ ، وَكُفُّ الأَذَى ، وَرَدُّ السَّلامِ ، وَالأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ، وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "Avoid sitting on the roads." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! We have no alternative but to sit like this. We sit in this way and talk among ourselves. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you insist on sitting, then give the road its right. The people asked: What is the right of the road? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Lowering the gaze, removing harmful things, responding to greetings, enjoining good, and forbidding evil."
