Chapter on Companionship and Sitting – What to say when leaving a gathering, which will seal it if it was good and expiate if it was idle
Hadith 593
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، أَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي هِلالٍ ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيَّ حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " كَلِمَاتٌ لا يَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِنَّ أَحَدٌ فِي مَجْلِسِ لَغْوٍ أَوْ مَجْلِسِ بَاطِلٍ عِنْدَ قِيَامِهِ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِلا كَفَّرَتْهُنَّ عَنْهُ ، وَلا يَقُولُهُنَّ فِي مَجْلِسِ خَيْرٍ وَمَجْلِسِ ذِكْرٍ ، إِلا خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهِنَّ عَلَيْهِ كَمَا يُخْتَمُ بِالْخَاتَمِ عَلَى الصَّحِيفَةِ : سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ " ، قَالَ عَمْرٌو : حَدَّثَنِي بِنَحْوِ ذَلِكَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ، عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There are some words, whoever is present in any vain gathering or false gathering, and upon leaving from there recites these words three times, then these words will become an expiation for him. And whoever recites these words in any gathering of goodness or gathering of remembrance, then these words will be sealed with his name, just as a document is sealed. (Those words are:) "Glory is to You, O Allah! And praise is for You. There is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance."
A narrator named Amr states: A similar narration was related to me by Abdur Rahman bin Abu Amr from Maqburi, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), as being transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
