Section on Righteousness and Kindness – Hope of forgiveness for one who removes harm from trees and walls if Muslims are harmed by it
Hadith 540
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ بْنِ وَرْدَانَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " نَزَعَ رَجُلٌ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ غُصْنَ شَوْكٍ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ ، إِمَّا كَانَ فِي شَجَرَةٍ فَقَطَعَهُ فَأَلْقَاهُ ، وَإِمَّا كَانَ مَوْضُوعًا فَأَمَاطَهُ ، فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهَا ، فَأَدْخَلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : مَعْنَى قَوْلِهِ : " لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ " يُرِيدُ بِهِ : سِوَى الإِسْلامِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "A man removed a thorny branch from the road. This person had never done any good deed, either the branch was attached to a tree and he cut it off and put it aside, or it was lying on the road and he moved it away, so Allah Almighty accepted this deed of his and admitted him into Paradise."
Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says: The words of the narration "he had never done any good deed" mean that apart from being a Muslim, he had not done any other good deed.
