Sayyiduna Salim bin Jabir Hijimi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting wrapped in his cloak in the posture of ihtiba, and its edge was over his feet. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please advise me. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Fear Allah Almighty and do not consider any good deed insignificant (even if that good deed is) that you pour water from your bucket into the vessel of one who asks for water, or that you meet your brother with a cheerful face. And avoid letting your lower garment hang down, for this is among the signs of arrogance, and Allah Almighty does not like it. And if someone taunts you about a fault which he knows exists in you, then do not taunt him about something which you know exists in him. Let him do what he does; its burden will be upon him, and you will receive your reward. And never speak ill of anyone. The narrator says: After that, I never spoke ill of any animal or human being.
Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "It is obligatory upon you to fear Allah Almighty," is a command that is obligatory upon all addressed people, that they should fear Allah Almighty in all circumstances. Whereas pouring water from your bucket into the bucket of one who asks for water, or meeting your Muslim brother with a cheerful face while talking to him, are actions whose command is for recommendation, and the purpose is to attain reward.

Sayyiduna Abu Juray Hijimi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a man from the countryside. Teach us something by which Allah will benefit us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Never consider any good deed insignificant, even if that good deed is that you pour water from your bucket into the vessel of one who asks for water. Or that good deed is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face. And avoid letting your lower garment hang down, for this is a sign of arrogance, and Allah does not like it. And if someone says something bad to you regarding a fault which he knows is in you, then do not say something bad to him regarding a fault which you know is in him. Your reward will be given to you, and the burden will be upon the one who said that thing.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The command to not consider any good deed insignificant is such an instruction through which guidance is intended, and the prohibition of letting the lower garment hang down is a binding command due to a specific reason, and that is arrogance. So, when the reason of arrogance is absent, then there is no harm in letting the lower garment hang down. And when a person is spoken ill of, then the prohibition of speaking ill in return applies to that time, to before that time, and to after that time, even if the person was not spoken ill of.
