Chapter on the Neighbor – Allah’s reward for one who conceals his Muslim brother’s faults is like the reward for saving a buried girl
Hadith 517
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ نَشِيطٍ الْوَعْلانِيُّ ، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ دُخَيْنٍ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ ، كَاتِبِ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ : إِنَّ لَنَا جِيرَانًا يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ ، وَأَنَا دَاعٍ الشُّرْطَ لِيَأْخُذُوهُمْ ، فقَالَ عُقْبَةُ : وَيْحَكَ ، لا تَفْعَلْ ، وَلَكِنْ عِظْهُمْ وَهَدِّدْهُمْ ، قَالَ : إِنِّي نَهَيْتُهُمْ ، فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا ، وَإِنِّي دَاعٍ الشُّرْطَ لِيَأْخُذُوهُمْ ، فقَالَ عُقْبَةُ : وَيْحَكَ ، لا تَفْعَلْ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ سَتَرَ عَوْرَةَ مُؤْمِنٍ ، فَكَأَنَّمَا اسْتَحْيَى مَوْءُودَةً فِي قَبْرِهَا " .
Abu Haitham Dukheen, who was the servant of Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him): Some of our neighbors drink alcohol. I want to call the officer so that he may arrest them. Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Woe to you, do not do this, rather give them clear advice, warn them. He said: I have forbidden them, but they do not refrain. Now I will call the officer so that he may arrest them. Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Woe to you, do not do this. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals the faults of a believer, it is as if he saves a girl buried alive from her grave."
