Ibn Hani narrates: When Sayyiduna Hani (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as part of a delegation from his tribe, the Prophet (peace be upon him) heard the people of his tribe calling Sayyiduna Hani (may Allah be pleased with him) by the nickname "Abu al-Hakam." The Prophet (peace be upon him) called him and said: Verily, Allah Almighty is the only "Hakam" (Judge), and judgment returns to Him alone. So why is your nickname "Abu al-Hakam"? Sayyiduna Hani (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: When the people of my tribe disagree about something, they are pleased with my judgment (as an arbitrator), so I decide between them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: This is a good thing. And these children—Shurayh, Abdullah, and Muslim—the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Who is the eldest among them? He replied: Shurayh. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You are Abu Shurayh. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) called him and his children. When the people of his tribe were about to return to their area, the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted each person the land he liked in his area. So Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me something that will make Paradise obligatory for me. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Speak good words, spread peace (salam), and feed others.
