Chapter on Spreading Peace and Feeding Others – Mention of the prohibition against initiating greetings with People of the Book
Hadith 500
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا تُبَادِرُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ بِالسَّلامِ ، فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ ، فَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "Do not initiate the greeting of peace to the People of the Book. When you meet them on the road, force them to take the narrower path."
Hadith 501
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْخَطِيبُ بِالأَهْوَازِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَبْدَءُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ بِالسَّلامِ ، وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ ، فَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not initiate greeting (salaam) to the People of the Book. When you see them on a road, force them to take the narrower path."
