Chapter on Good Character – Good character is among the heaviest things in the scale on Judgment Day.
Hadith 481
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ ، وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ مُحْرِزٍ ، وَالْحَوْضِيُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ أَبِي بَزَّةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ الْكَيْخَارَانِيِّ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَثْقَلُ شَيْءٍ فِي الْمِيزَانِ الْخُلُقُ الْحَسَنُ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : عَطَاءٌ هَذَا هُوَ عَطَاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَكَيْخَارَانَ : مَوْضِعٌ بِالْيَمَنِ وَأُمُّ الدَّرْدَاءِ : هِيَ الصُّغْرَى وَاسْمُهَا هُجَيْمَةُ بِنْتُ حُيَيٍّ الأَوْصَابِيَّةُ ، وَالْكُبْرَى : خَيْرَةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّةُ ، لَهَا صُحْبَةٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The heaviest thing in the scale is good character.”
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator named ‘Ata is ‘Ata bin Abdullah, and Kaikharan is the name of a place in Yemen. Sayyida Umm Darda’ the younger was named Hujaymah bint Hayyi, while the elder Sayyida Umm Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with her) was named Khayrah bint Abu Hudard Ansariyyah, and she was a female companion.
