Chapter on Parents’ Rights – One must honor parents over voluntary jihad.
Hadith 423
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ مِسْعَرِ بْنِ كِدَامٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يُبَايِعُهُ عَلَى الْهِجْرَةِ ، وَقَدْ أَسْلَمَ ، وَقَالَ : قَدْ تَرَكْتُ أَبَوَيَّ يَبْكِيَانِ ، قَالَ : " ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمَا ، فَأَضْحِكْهُمَا كَمَا أَبْكَيْتَهُمَا " وَأَبَى أَنْ يَخْرُجَ مَعَهُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to pledge allegiance for migration. He accepted Islam, and then said: I have left my parents weeping. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Go back to them, and make them laugh just as you made them weep. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not accept his request to go with him (for jihad).
