Chapter on Parents’ Rights – Honoring parents is better than voluntary jihad.
Hadith 422
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمَذَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ بْنُ السَّرْحِ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ دَرَّاجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا هَاجَرَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِنَ الْيَمَنِ ، فقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي هَاجَرْتُ ؟ فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قَدْ هَجَّرْتَ الشِّرْكَ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ الْجِهَادُ ؟ هَلْ لَكَ أَحَدٌ بِالْيَمَنِ " ؟ قَالَ : أَبَوَايَ ، قَالَ : " أَذِنَا لَكَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : لا ، قَالَ : " ارْجِعْ فَاسْتَأْذِنْهُمَا ، فَإِنْ أَذِنَا لَكَ ، فَجَاهِدْ ، وَإِلا فَبِرَّهُمَا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man migrated from Yemen and came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! I have migrated. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have disassociated yourself from shirk, but (the matter of) jihad remains. Do you have any relatives in Yemen? He replied: My parents. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Did they give you permission? He replied: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go back and seek permission from both of them. If they permit you, then take part in jihad; otherwise, serve them.
