Chapter on Sincerity and Secret Deeds – One must persist in self-discipline and maintaining secret deeds.
Hadith 401
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ بِالأُبُلَّةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : كَانَتْ تُصَلِّي خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، امْرَأَةٌ حَسْنَاءُ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ النَّاسِ ، فَكَانَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَتَقَدَّمُ فِي الصَّفِّ الأَوَّلِ لأَنْ لا يَرَاهَا ، وَيَسْتَأْخِرُ بَعْضُهُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُؤَخَّرِ ، فَكَانَ إِذَا رَكَعَ ، نَظَرَ مِنْ تَحْتِ إِبْطِهِ ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِي شَأْنِهَا : وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ سورة الحجر آية 24 .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A very beautiful woman used to perform prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of those present would stand in the first row so that they would not see her, and some people would stand in the last row so that when they went into bowing (ruku‘), they could look at her from under their armpits. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse regarding this: "And We surely know those of you who go forward and those who lag behind."
