Chapter on Sincerity and Secret Deeds – A Muslim’s sincerity benefits him, even erasing past sins before Islam.
Hadith 396
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَيُؤَاخِذُ اللَّهُ أَحَدَنَا بِمَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ؟ قَالَ : " مَنْ أَحْسَنَ فِي الإِسْلامِ ، لَمْ يُؤَاخَذْ بِمَا عَمِلَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فِي الإِسْلامِ ، أُخِذَ بِالأَوَّلِ وَالآخِرِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Will Allah hold any of us accountable for the deeds he used to do during the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Whoever does good in Islam, he will not be held accountable for what he did during the time of ignorance. And whoever does evil in Islam, then he will be held accountable for all his deeds, both former and later."
