Chapter on Sincerity and Secret Deeds – One must correct his intention and be sincere in all acts of worship.
Hadith 392
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ فَيَّاضٍ بِدِمَشْقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ رَبٍّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا الْعَمَلُ كَالْوِعَاءِ ، إِذَا طَابَ أَعْلاهُ ، طَابَ أَسْفَلُهُ ، وَإِذَا خَبُثَ أَعْلاهُ ، خَبُثَ أَسْفَلُهُ " .
Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said from the pulpit: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The example of deeds is like that of a vessel; if its upper part is clean, then the lower part will also be clean, and if the upper part is dirty, then the lower part will also be dirty."
