Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – Allah writes a good deed for one who intends a sin but does not commit it.
Hadith 381
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ بْنِ وَرْدَانَ بِمِصْرَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى الْوَقَّارُ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، عَنِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلا ، قَالَ : " إِذَا هَمَّ عَبْدِي بِسَيِّئَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا ، فَاكْتُبُوهَا لَهُ حَسَنَةً ، فَإِنْ عَمِلَهَا ، فَاكْتُبُوهَا لَهُ سَيِّئَةً ، فَإِنْ تَابَ مِنْهَا ، فَامْحُوهَا عَنْهُ ، وَإِذَا هَمَّ عَبْدِي بِحَسَنَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا ، فَاكْتُبُوهَا لَهُ حَسَنَةً ، فَإِنْ عَمِلَهَا ، فَاكْتُبُوهَا لَهُ بِعَشْرَةِ أَمْثَالِهَا إِلَى سَبْعِ مِائَةِ ضِعْفٍ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "(O angels!) When My servant intends to commit an evil deed and does not act upon it, then you record it as a good deed, and if he acts upon it, then you record it as an evil deed, and if he repents from it, then you erase the evil from his record. And when My servant intends to do a good deed and does not act upon it, then you record it as a good deed, and if he acts upon it, then you record it as a reward from ten times up to seven hundred times."
