Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – Allah records the reward for both secret and public acts of obedience.
Hadith 375
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُكْرَمٍ بِالْبَصْرَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَحْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ أَبُو سِنَانٍ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَجُلا ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَعْمَلُ الْعَمَلَ وَيُسِرُّهُ ، فَإِذَا اطُّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ ، سَرَّهُ ؟ قَالَ : " لَهُ أَجْرَانِ : أَجْرُ السِّرِّ ، وَأَجْرُ الْعَلانِيَةِ " قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَوْلُهُ " إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَعْمَلُ الْعَمَلَ وَيُسِرُّهُ ، فَإِذَا اطُّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ سَرَّهُ " مَعْنَاهُ أَنَّهُ يَسُرُّهُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ وَفَّقَهُ لِذَلِكَ الْعَمَلِ ، فَعَسَى يُسْتَنُّ بِهِ فِيهِ ، فَإِذَا كَانَ كَذَلِكَ ، كُتِبَ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ ، وَإِذَا سَرَّهُ ذَلِكَ لِتَعْظِيمِ النَّاسِ إِيَّاهُ ، أَوْ مَيْلِهِمْ إِلَيْهِ ، كَانَ ذَلِكَ ضَرْبًا مِنَ الرِّيَاءِ ، لا يَكُونُ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ وَلا أَجْرٌ وَاحِدٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah! A person performs a deed and keeps it hidden, but when his deed becomes known, should he like that?” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Such a person will receive two rewards: one for keeping it hidden and one for it becoming known. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The wording of the narration is: “Indeed, a person performs a deed, and he likes it, and when it becomes known, this thing pleases him.” Its meaning is: A man is pleased that Allah Almighty granted him the ability to do that deed, because it is possible that others may follow him in this matter. So, when this is the situation, he will receive two kinds of reward. But when a man is pleased so that people will honor him or incline towards him, this is a kind of showing off (riya), and such a person will not receive double reward, rather he will not receive even a single reward.
