Hadith 374
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about a deed that will admit me into Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have used few words but asked about a great matter. Free a soul (i.e., a slave man or woman) and set a neck free. He asked: Are these not the same thing? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, freeing a soul means that you simply set him free, and setting a neck free means that you pay his price (and free another person’s slave). Give such a gift that continues (to benefit), and spend on a relative who does not maintain ties of kinship. And if you do not have the ability for this, then feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, enjoin good, and forbid evil. And if you do not have the ability for even this, then restrain your tongue except for good words.
