Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – One should accept Allah’s concessions and not overburden oneself.
Hadith 355
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ خَلِيلٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : رَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلا فِي سَفَرٍ ، فِي ظِلِّ شَجَرَةٍ ، يَرْشَحُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ ، فقَالَ : " مَا بَالُ صَاحِبِكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا : صَائِمٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ مِنَ الْبِرِّ الصِّيَامُ فِي السَّفَرِ ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِرُخْصَةِ اللَّهِ الَّتِي رَخَّصَ لَكُمْ فَاقْبَلُوهَا " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man during a journey who was under the shade of a tree, and water was being sprinkled on him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired: "What has happened to your companion?" The people replied: "O Messenger of Allah! He is observing a fast." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting during travel is not an act of righteousness. It is obligatory upon you to accept the concession that Allah Almighty has granted you."
