Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – One should aim for moderation in deeds and not overdo acts of obedience to the point of notoriety.
Hadith 349
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ الْمَكِّيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لِكُلِّ عَمَلٍ شِرَّةٌ ، وَلِكُلِّ شِرَّةٍ فَتْرَةٌ ، فَإِنْ كَانَ صَاحِبُهَا سَادًّا وَقَارِبًا ، فَارْجُوهُ ، وَإِنْ أُشِيرَ إِلَيْهِ بِالأَصَابِعِ ، فَلا تَعُدُّوهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, every deed has a period of enthusiasm, and every enthusiasm has a period of slackening. When the doer remains upright and adopts moderation, then have hope for him; but if he is pointed at with a finger (i.e., becomes notorious), then do not count him among any number."
