Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – One should not despair if he experiences periods of weakness in obedience.
Hadith 344
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قُدَيْدٍ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَيْنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا مَا نُحِبُّ ، فَإِذَا رَجَعْنَا إِلَى أَهَالِينَا فَخَالَطْنَاهُمْ ، أَنْكَرْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ تَدُومُونَ عَلَى مَا تَكُونُونَ عِنْدِي فِي الْحَالِ ، لَصَافَحَتْكُمُ الْمَلائِكَةُ حَتَّى تُظِلَّكُمْ بِأَجْنِحَتِهَا ، وَلَكِنْ سَاعَةً وَسَاعَةً " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: When we are with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we find our inner states to be pleasing, but when we go to our families and mingle with them, our states become different. The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: If you were to remain permanently in the state you are in when you are with me, then the angels would shake hands with you and shade you with their wings, but (the state) changes from time to time.
