Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – One must not rely on past good deeds but pray for a good end.
Hadith 339
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْقَطَّانُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ رَبٍّ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِخَوَاتِيمِهَا ، كَالْوِعَاءِ إِذَا طَابَ أَعْلاهُ طَابَ أَسْفَلُهُ ، وَإِذَا خَبُثَ أَعْلاهُ خَبُثَ أَسْفَلُهُ " .
Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The worth of deeds depends on their ending, just like a vessel—if its upper part is clean, then the lower part will also be clean; if the upper part is dirty, then the lower part will also be dirty."
