Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – Whoever draws near to Allah by a handspan or arm’s length, Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are even closer.
Hadith 328
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ الْمِنْهَالِ ابْنِ أَخِي الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ الْمِنْهَالِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنِ الأَغَرِّ أَبِي مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِيمَا يَحْكِي عَنِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلا ، قَالَ : " الْكِبْرِيَاءُ رِدَائِي ، وَالْعَظَمَةُ إِزَارِي ، فَمَنْ نَازَعَنِي فِي وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُمَا ، قَذَفْتُهُ فِي النَّارِ ، وَمَنِ اقْتَرَبَ إِلَيَّ شِبْرًا ، اقْتَرَبْتُ مِنْهُ ذِرَاعًا ، وَمَنِ اقْتَرَبَ مِنِّي ذِرَاعًا ، اقْتَرَبْتُ مِنْهُ بَاعًا ، وَمَنْ جَاءَنِي يَمْشِي ، جِئْتُهُ أُهَرْوِلُ ، وَمَنْ جَاءَنِي يُهَرْوِلُ ، جِئْتُهُ أَسْعَى ، وَمَنْ ذَكَرَنِي فِي نَفْسِهِ ، ذَكَرْتُهُ فِي نَفْسِي ، وَمَنْ ذَكَرَنِي فِي مَلأٍ ، ذَكَرْتُهُ فِي مَلأٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَطْيَبَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Allah Almighty says: "Majesty is My cloak and greatness is My lower garment. Whoever tries to compete with Me in either of these, I will cast him into Hell. And whoever comes near to Me by a handspan, I come near to him by an arm's length; and whoever comes near to Me by an arm's length, I come near to him by the span of two outstretched arms. And whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running; and whoever comes to Me running, I come to him even more swiftly. And whoever remembers Me in his heart, I remember him alone; and whoever remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better and purer than his."
