Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – One must fulfill obligations, perform extra acts, and provide for oneself and family.
Hadith 316
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ الْبَلَدِيُّ الزَّاهِدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَابِرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : دَخَلَتِ امْرَأَةُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَيْنَهَا سَيِّئَةَ الْهَيْئَةِ ، فَقُلْنَ : مَا لَكِ ، مَا فِي قُرَيْشٍ رَجُلٌ أَغْنَى مِنْ بَعْلِكِ ، قَالَتْ : مَا لَنَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ ؟ أَمَّا نَهَارُهُ فَصَائِمٌ ، وَأَمَّا لَيْلُهُ فَقَائِمٌ ، قَالَ : فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرْنَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَلَقِيَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فقَالَ : " يَا عُثْمَانُ ، أَمَا لَكَ فِي أُسْوَةٍ " ؟ قَالَ : وَمَا ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي ؟ قَالَ : " أَمَّا أَنْتَ فَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ وَتَصُومُ النَّهَارَ ، وَإِنَّ لأَهْلِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، وَإِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا ، صَلِّ وَنَمْ ، وَصُمْ وَأَفْطِرْ " ، قَالَ : فَأَتَتْهُمُ الْمَرْأَةُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَطِرَةً كَأَنَّهَا عَرُوسٌ ، فَقُلْنَ لَهَا : مَهْ ، قَالَتْ : أَصَابَنَا مَا أَصَابَ النَّاسُ .
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The wife of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The wives saw that her outward appearance was not good, so they asked: What has happened to you? Among the Quraysh, there is no one more prosperous than your husband. The woman replied: We have nothing to do with him. He fasts during the day and spends the night in voluntary prayers. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came home, and the pure wives mentioned this matter before him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) met Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: O Uthman! Is there not an example for you in my way? He asked: What has happened, O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You spend the whole night in voluntary prayers and fast during the day? Your wife has a right over you. Your body has a right over you. Pray voluntary prayers at night and also sleep, and fast during the day and also do not fast. The narrator says: After this, his wife came to the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and she had applied perfume as if she were a bride. The wives asked her: What happened? She replied: We have also received what the people have received.
