Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There were three men among the Children of Israel. One was afflicted with leprosy, one was lame, and one was blind. Allah Almighty intended to test them, so He sent an angel to them. The angel came to the man with leprosy and asked: 'Which thing is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'A fair complexion and clear skin.' The angel asked: 'Which wealth is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'Camels.' The angel passed his hand over him, and his illness was cured. Then he was given a pregnant she-camel. The angel said: 'May Allah bless this for you.'
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the angel came to the bald man and asked: 'Which thing is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'Good hair, and that this affliction be removed from me, because of which people dislike me.' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The angel passed his hand over him, and his illness was cured, and he was given good hair.
The angel asked: 'Which wealth is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'Cows.' So he was given a pregnant cow. The angel said: 'May Allah bless this for you.'
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the angel came to the blind man and asked: 'Which thing is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'That Allah Almighty restores my sight so that I may see people.' The angel passed his hand over him, and Allah Almighty restored his sight.
The angel asked: 'Which wealth is most beloved to you?' He replied: 'Goats.' So he was given a pregnant goat.
All three of them had offspring from their animals, so the first man had many camels, the second had many cows, and the third had many goats.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the angel came in his original form and appearance to the (former) leper and said: 'I am a poor and traveling man. My provisions have run out during my journey. Now, besides Allah and you, I have no support. I ask you by the One who gave you a beautiful complexion, clear skin, and wealth, to give me a camel so that I may continue my journey.' The man said: 'I have many expenses. (I cannot help you.)'
The angel said: 'Perhaps I recognize you. Were you not the one afflicted with leprosy? People disliked you, and you were poor, but Allah Almighty gave you wealth.' The man said: 'I inherited this wealth from my forefathers.' The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to your former condition.'
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the angel came to the bald man in the same form and said to him what he had said to the first, and he gave the same answer as the first. The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to your former condition.'
Then the angel came in the same form and appearance to the (former) blind man and said: 'I am a poor and traveling man. My provisions have run out.' The man said: 'I was once blind, and Allah Almighty restored my sight. Now, take whatever you wish and leave whatever you wish. By Allah! Today, whatever you take in the name of Allah, I will not be hard on you in this matter.' The angel said: 'Keep your wealth with you. You have been tested, and you have pleased Allah, but your two companions have incurred His displeasure.'"
