Chapter on Acts of Obedience and Their Rewards – Reason the Prophet (peace be upon him) sometimes left good deeds in public.
Hadith 312
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ َالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَتْ تَقُولُ : " مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَبِّحُ سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَى " ، وَكَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُسَبِّحُهَا ، وَكَانَتْ تَقُولُ : " إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَرَكَ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْعَمَلِ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَسْتَنَّ النَّاسُ بِهِ ، فَيُفْرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ " .
Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not regularly perform the Duha prayer, whereas Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to perform this prayer.
She used to say: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would abandon many actions for fear that people might start following that way and it might become obligatory upon them.
