It is narrated about Alqamah bin Waqas. Once, a man from Madinah Munawwarah, who was a person of means (or perhaps a government official), passed by him while Alqamah was sitting in the market of Madinah Munawwarah. Alqamah said: O so-and-so! You have some rights and you have some duties as well. I have seen that you frequently go to these rulers and converse with them. I heard the companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him), narrate this: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, one of you says a word seeking Allah’s pleasure, and he does not realize how far it will reach, so Allah records His pleasure for him until the Day he will meet Allah. And a person says a word that incurs Allah’s displeasure, and he does not realize how far it will reach, but Allah records His displeasure for him until the Day of Resurrection.” Alqamah said: Woe to you, examine what you say and about what you speak! For since I heard this hadith from Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), I have refrained from saying many things.
