Chapter: Attributes – A narration criticized by innovators who failed to understand its meaning
Hadith 268
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرَمِيُّ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " يُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ فَتَقُولُ : هَلْ مِنْ مَزِيدٍ ؟ حَتَّى يَضَعَ الرَّبُّ جَلَّ وَعَلا قَدْمَهُ فِيهَا ، فَتَقُولُ : قَطْ قَط ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : هَذَا الْخَبَرُ مِنَ الأَخْبَارِ الَّتِي أُطْلِقَتْ بِتَمْثِيلِ الْمُجَاوَرَةِ ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ مِنَ الأُمَمِ وَالأَمْكِنَةِ الَّتِي عُصِيَ الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهَا ، فَلا تَزَالُ تَسْتَزِيدُ حَتَّى يَضَعَ الرَّبُّ جَلَّ وَعَلا مَوْضِعًا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ وَالأَمْكِنَةِ فِي النَّارِ ، فَتَمْتَلِئُ فَتَقُولُ : قَطْ قَطْ ، تُرِيدُ : حَسْبِي حَسْبِي ، لأَنَّ الْعَرَبَ تُطْلِقُ فِي لُغَتِهَا اسْمَ الْقَدْمِ عَلَى الْمَوْضِعِ ، قَالَ الِلَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلا : لَهُمْ قَدْمُ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ ، يُرِيدُ : مَوْضِعَ صِدْقٍ ، لا أَنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَعَلا يَضَعُ قَدْمَهُ فِي النَّارِ ، جَلَّ رَبُّنَا وَتَعَالَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَأَشْبَاهِهِ .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "People will be thrown into Hell, and Hell will say: 'Are there any more?' until the Lord places His foot upon it, then it will say: 'Enough, enough.'"
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This is one of those narrations in which the example of proximity is applied, and its form is this: On the Day of Resurrection, some people and places will be thrown into Hell—the places where Allah Almighty was disobeyed. Hell will continue to demand more, until the Lord places one of the disbelievers or one of the places into Hell, then it will be filled. Then Hell will say: 'Enough, enough.' What is meant by this is: 'This is sufficient for me, this is sufficient for me.' The reason for this is: The Arabs sometimes use the word 'foot' in their language to mean 'place,' as in the statement of Allah Almighty: 'For them will be a place of truth with their Lord.' What is meant by this is a place of truth; it does not mean that Allah Almighty will place His foot in Hell. Our Lord is exalted and far above this and similar things.
