Hadith 264
The narrator named Abu Ja'far reports: Ubaid bin Umair was delivering a sermon in Makkah Mukarramah. Present with him were Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him), and other noble companions as well. Ubaid bin Umair stated: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a hypocrite is like a goat between two herds; if it goes towards one herd, it is butted, and if it goes towards the other herd, it is butted." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is not so. At this, Ubaid bin Umair became angry and said: Are you rejecting my statement? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am not rejecting your statement, but when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, I was present with him. He said this. Upon this, Abdullah bin Safwan asked: O Abu Abdur Rahman! What did the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (For the herd) the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used the word "Rabidain" (whereas you used the word "Ghanamain"). Then Ubaid bin Umair or perhaps Abdullah bin Safwan said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! The meaning of both "Rabidain" and "Ghanamain" is the same. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard it in this way, I heard it in this way. I heard it in this way. (The narrator states) Whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard any word from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he would neither add to it nor subtract from it.
