Chapter: Qualities of the Believers – Description of how a Muslim resembles a tree
Hadith 244
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِذْ أُتِيَ بِجُمَّارٍ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مِنَ الشَّجَرِ شَجَرَةٌ بَرَكَتُهَا كَالْمُسْلِمِ " ، قَالَ : فَأُرِيتُ أَنَّهَا النَّخْلَةُ ، ثُمَّ نَظَرْتُ إِلَى الْقَوْمِ ، فَأَنَا عَاشِرُ عَشَرَةٍ ، وَأَنَا أَحْدَثُ الْقَوْمِ ، فَسَكَتُّ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). During that time, "Jumar" (the gum of the date-palm tree) was brought, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: There is a tree whose blessing is like that of a Muslim. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I thought that it would be the date-palm tree. Then I looked at those present, and I was the tenth person among ten people there, and I was the youngest among them. Therefore, I remained silent. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: It is the date-palm tree.
Hadith 245
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الطَّيِّبِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّيْرَفِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا لأَصْحَابِهِ : " أَخْبِرُونِي عَنْ شَجَرَةٍ مَثَلُهَا مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ " ، قَالَ : فَجَعَلَ الْقَوْمُ يَتَذَاكَرُونَ شَجَرًا مِنْ شَجَرِ الْوَادِي قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : وَأُلْقِيَ فِي نَفْسِي أَوْ رَوْعِي أَنَّهَا النَّخْلَةُ ، قَالَ : فَجَعَلْتُ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَقُولَ ، فَأَرَى أَسْنَانًا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ ، فَأَهَابُ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ ، فَلَمْ يَكْشِفُوا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ " .
Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to his companions: Tell me about a tree whose example is like that of a believing servant. The narrator says: People began discussing various trees of the forest. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It occurred to me that it could be the date palm tree. At first, I was about to say this, but when I considered the ages of those present, I did not have the courage to speak. No one could answer this question, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: It is the date palm tree.
