Abdur Rahman bin Abu Amrah Ansari narrates from his father: We were with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a battle, and the people were afflicted with severe hunger. They sought permission from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to slaughter some of their riding animals. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! If we face the enemy on foot in a state of hunger, what will become of us? O Messenger of Allah! If you deem it appropriate, then tell the people to bring whatever food and drink they have left with them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave this order, so people began to bring those things; one person brought a handful of grain or a little more. The one who brought the most brought a sa’ of dates. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had all of it gathered on a cloth, then he supplicated to Allah as Allah willed, then he called the people to bring their vessels, and he began to pour the food into them, so there was not a single vessel in the army that was not filled, and the food remained as much as it was before. The Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled until his molar teeth became visible, and he said: “I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness before Allah that whoever among the believing servants comes before Allah with these two statements, then these two things will become a means of salvation from Hell for that person on the Day of Resurrection.”
Sayyiduna Abu Amrah Ansari’s name is Thalabah bin Amr bin Muhsin.
