Chapter: Obligation of Faith – Clarification of the Prophet’s statement “remove from Hell anyone with a mustard seed of faith in his heart”
Hadith 183
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي رَجَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زُهِيَرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مُيِّزَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ ، يَدْخُلُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ النَّارَ ، قَامَتِ الرُّسُلُ فَشَفَعُوا ، فَيُقَالُ : اذْهَبُوا فَمَنْ عَرَفْتُمْ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالَ قِيرَاطٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ ، فَيُخْرِجُونَ بَشَرًا كَثِيرًا ، ثُمَّ يُقَالُ : اذْهَبُوا فَمَنْ عَرَفْتُمْ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالَ خَرْدَلَةٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ ، فَيُخْرِجُونَ بَشَرًا كَثِيرًا ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ جَلَّ وَعَلا : أَنَا الآنَ أُخْرِجُ بِنِعْمَتِي وَبِرَحْمَتِي ، فَيُخْرِجُ أَضْعَافَ مَا أَخْرَجُوا وَأَضْعَافَهُمْ ، قَدْ امْتَحَشُوا وَصَارُوا فَحْمًا ، فَيُلْقَوْنَ فِي نَهْرٍ ، أَوْ فِي نَهْرٍ مِنْ أَنْهَارِ الْجَنَّةِ ، فَتَسْقُطُ مُحَاشُّهُمْ عَلَى حَافَةِ ذَلِكَ النَّهَرِ ، فَيَعُودُونَ بِيضًا مِثْلَ الثَّعَارِيرِ ، فَيُكْتَبُ فِي رِقَابِهِمْ : عُتَقَاءُ اللَّهِ ، وَيُسَمَّوْنَ فِيهَا الْجَهَنَّمِيِّينَ " الثَّعَارِيرُ : الْقِثَّاءُ الصِّغَارُ ، قَالَهُ الشَّيْخُ .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the people of Paradise and the people of Hell will be distinguished from each other, and the people of Paradise will enter Paradise and the people of Hell will enter Hell, then the Messengers will stand and they will intercede. Then it will be said: Go and take out from (Hell) every person in whose heart you find faith equal to a qirat (a small weight). So they will take out a great many people. Then it will be said: Go and take out every person in whose heart you find even faith equal to a grain of mustard seed. So they will take out many people. (Then) Allah the Exalted will say: Now I will take out (people from Hell) because of My bounty and mercy. So, as many people as the Messengers had taken out, Allah the Exalted will take out many times more people from Hell. Those people will have been burnt and turned into charcoal; they will be thrown into a river. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) They will be thrown into a river of Paradise, so their burnt parts will fall off at the bank of the river and they will become white like 'tharareer'. It will be written on their necks: These are the ones freed by Allah the Exalted, and (in Paradise) their name will be 'Jahannami' (people of Hell). Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) says: 'Tharareer' is a small type of flower. This has been stated by the Shaykh."
