Ata bin Yasar, who is the judge of Madinah Munawwarah, narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Soon after me there will come rulers who will say things which they do not do, and they will do things which they have not been commanded to do. So whoever strives against them with his hand, he is a believer; and whoever strives against them with his tongue, he is a believer; and whoever strives against them with his heart, he is a believer. After that, there will be no faith. The narrator named Ata says: When I heard this hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), I took this narration to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him about it. He asked: Did you yourself hear Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this? Ata says: I said: He is ill. What is the reason that you do not go to visit him? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take us to him. When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went there, I also went with him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired about his illness, then asked him about this hadith. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there, he was rubbing his palm and saying: Ibn Umm Abd (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him) cannot attribute a false statement to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
