Hadith 172
Abu Jamrah narrates: I used to perform the duties of interpreter between Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people. (That is, when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was the governor, I was his secretary.) Once, a woman came to him; she wanted to ask about the nabidh (fermented drink) made in a pitcher. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A delegation from the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Which delegation is this, and which tribe are you from? They replied: We belong to the tribe of Rabi’ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Welcome to this tribe (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words), this delegation for whom there is no disgrace or regret. They said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you from a distant region. Between us and you is the tribe of Mudar, who are disbelievers. Therefore, we can only come to you during the sacred months. Please command us with something that we can convey to those behind us, and by which we may enter Paradise. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things. He commanded them to have “faith only in Allah the Exalted.” He said: Do you know what it means to have “faith only in Allah the Exalted”? They replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is to testify that there is no god but Allah, and indeed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. (Further commands are:) To establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and that you pay the khums (one-fifth) from the spoils of war. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from (using) dubba’, hantam, muzaffat, and naqir (for making drinks). Here, the narrator named Shu’bah sometimes narrates the word naqir and sometimes the word maqir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Memorize these things and inform those behind you about them.
