Yahya bin Ya’mar narrates: I and Humaid bin Abdur Rahman Himyari set out for Hajj, or perhaps for Umrah. We thought: Maybe we will meet someone from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), so we can ask them about Qadar (predestination). Then we met Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I realized that my companion would want me to begin the conversation. We said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! There are some people among us who recite the Qur’an and seek knowledge, but they believe that Qadar has no reality, and that matters begin anew (without any prior decree). Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you meet those people, tell them that I have nothing to do with them, and they have nothing to do with me. By the One in whose name Abdullah bin Umar swears, if any one of them were to spend gold equal to Mount Uhud and does not believe in Qadar, his action would not be accepted. Then Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this, he narrates: One day the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting. Meanwhile, a man came whose beard was extremely black and whose clothes were extremely white. He placed his knee next to the knee of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! What is Islam? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: To testify that there is no god but Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House of Allah. The man said: You have spoken the truth. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were amazed at him asking the Prophet (peace be upon him) and then confirming his answer. The man said: Tell me, what is Iman (faith)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, resurrection after death, and to believe in Qadar, its good and its bad, its sweetness and its bitterness. The man said: You have spoken the truth. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were amazed at him asking the Prophet (peace be upon him) and then confirming his answer. The man said: Tell me, what is Ihsan? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then (know that) He sees you. The man said: Tell me, when is the Hour (Day of Judgment)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The one being asked knows no more about it than the one asking. The man asked: What are its signs? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: That a slave woman will give birth to her master. That you will see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings. The narrator says: Then the man turned and left. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Three days later, I met the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: O Umar! Do you know who that man was? I said: No. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: That was Jibreel (Gabriel), he came to teach you your religion.
