Hadith 163
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ، عَنْ أبيه ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْطَى رِجَالا ، وَلَمْ يُعْطِ رَجُلا مِنْهُمْ شَيْئًا ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَعْطَيْتَ فُلانًا وَفُلانًا ، وَلَمْ تُعْطِ فُلانًا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَوْ مُسْلِمٌ " قَالَهَا ثَلاثًا ، قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ : نَرَى أَنَّ الإِسْلامَ الْكَلِمَةُ ، وَالإِيمَانَ الْعَمَلُ .
Aamir bin Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave some gifts to certain people. He did not give anything to one of them. I said: O Messenger of Allah! You have given to so-and-so and so-and-so, but you have not given anything to that person, even though he is a believer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Is he a believer or a Muslim? He said this three times.
Zuhri says: We understand this to mean: By Islam is meant verbally reciting the testimony of faith, and by Iman is meant acting upon it.
