Permissibility for a scholar to answer with analogies and comparisons rather than definitive answers
Hadith 103
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيَمَ ، مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيَمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا الْمَخْزُومِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَصَمِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الأَصَمِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا مُحَمَّدُ ، أَرَأَيْتَ جَنَّةً عَرْضُهَا السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالأَرْضُ ، فَأَيْنَ النَّارُ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَرَأَيْتَ هَذَا اللَّيْلَ قَدْ كَانَ ، ثُمَّ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ ، أَيْنَ جُعِلَ ؟ " قَالَ : اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ : " فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon you)! Do you think that Paradise’s width is as much as the heavens and the earth, then where is Hell? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you considered the night? First it is, then it is no more. So where does it go? He said: Allah knows best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah does whatever He wills.
