Permissibility of answering with indirect speech, even if it includes self-praise
Hadith 101
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيَمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْسِمُ غَنِيمَةً بِالْجِعِرَّانَةِ ، إِذْ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ : اعْدِلْ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا وَيْلِي ! لَقَدْ شَقِيتُ إِنْ لَمْ أَعْدِلْ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was distributing the spoils of war at "Ji‘ranah." A man requested him: "Be just in your dealings." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) replied: "Alas! If I do not act justly, then I would be most unfortunate."
