Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed,
“The believers who sit (at home) are not equal...”
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring Zayd to me. He came with a tablet and inkpot (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), or a shoulder blade and inkpot. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Write this:
“The believers who sit (at home) and those who strive in the way of Allah are not equal.” The narrator says: At that time, behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyiduna Amr bin Umm Maktum, who was blind. He said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you command me, for I am a blind man? Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: At that very place, the words of the verse were revealed:
“Except those who are afflicted (with disability).”
Hadith 41
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring me a shoulder blade or a tablet, then he dictated this verse:
“The believers who sit (at home) are not equal...” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who brought a shoulder blade, and he wrote this verse on it. When Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum complained about his disability, these words were revealed: “Except those who are disabled.”
Mention of that narration which refutes the stance of the person who claims that Abu Ishaq Sabi’i did not hear this narration from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him).
