Narration that may appear to contradict Aisha’s narration mentioned earlier.
Hadith 34
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْعَطَّارُ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَلَمَةَ : أَيُّ الْقُرْآنِ أُنْزِلَ أَوَّلَ ؟ ، قَالَ : يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ ، قُلْتُ : إِنِّي نُبِّئْتُ أَنَّ أَوَّلَ سُورَةٍ أُنْزِلَتْ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ : اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ ، قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ : سَأَلْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : أَيُّ الْقُرْآنِ أُنْزِلَ أَوَّلَ ؟ قَالَ : يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : إِنِّي نُبِّئْتُ أَنَّ أَوَّلَ سُورَةٍ نَزَلَتْ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ : اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ قَالَ جَابِرٌ : لا أُحَدِّثُكَ إِلا مَا حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " جَاوَرْتُ فِي حِرَاءَ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ جِوَارِي نَزَلْتُ فَاسْتَبْطَنْتُ الْوَادِيَ ، فَنُودِيتُ ، فَنَظَرْتُ أَمَامِي ، وَخَلْفِي ، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي ، وَعَنْ شِمَالِي ، فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئًا ، فَنُودِيتُ ، فَنَظَرْتُ فَوْقِي ، فَأَنَا بِهِ قَاعِدٌ عَلَى عَرْشٍ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالأَرْضِ ، فَجُئِثْتُ مِنْهُ ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى خَدِيجَةَ ، فَقُلْتُ : دَثِّرُونِي دَثِّرُونِي ، وَصَبُّوا عَلَيَّ مَاءً بَارِدًا ، فَأُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ : يَأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ سورة المدثر آية 1 - 3 قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : فِي خَبَرِ جَابِرٍ هَذَا : إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ : يَأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّر سورة المدثر آية 1 ُ ، وَفِي خَبَرِ عَائِشَةَ : اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ سورة العلق آية 1 ، وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْخَبَرَيْنِ تَضَادٌّ ، إِذِ الِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْزَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ صَلَّى الِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ سورة العلق آية 1 وَهُوَ فِي الْغَارِ بِحِرَاءَ ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ إِلَى بَيْتِهِ دَثَّرَتْهُ خَدِيجَةُ وَصَبَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ الْبَارِدَ ، وَأُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ فِي بَيْتِ خَدِيجَةَ : يَأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ سورة المدثر آية 1 - 2 مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَكُونَ بَيْنَ الْخَبَرَيْنِ تَهَاتُرٌ أَوْ تَضَادٌّ .
Yahya bin Abu Kathir narrates: I asked Abu Salamah: Which part of the Qur'an was revealed first?
He replied: “«یا ایھا المدثر»” I said: I have learned that this surah was the first to be revealed from the Qur'an:
“Recite in the name of your Lord who created.”
So Abu Salamah said: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): Which part of the Qur'an was revealed first? He replied: “«یا یھا المدثر»”
I said to him: I have learned that this verse was the first to be revealed from the Qur'an: “Recite in the name of your Lord, seeking blessing with His name.”
So Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you exactly what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I was in retreat in the cave of Hira. When my retreat ended, I descended from the cave and came to the lower part of the valley. Then I was called out to. I looked in front of me, behind me, to my right and to my left, but I saw nothing.”
Then I was called again. I looked above me, and there was an angel sitting on a throne between the sky and the earth. I became frightened of him and came to Khadijah. I said: Cover me, cover me, pour cold water over me.
Then this verse was revealed to me:
“O you who wraps himself [in a cloak], arise and warn, and magnify your Lord.”
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In the narration from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), it is mentioned that «يا ايها المدثر» was revealed first in the Qur'an, while in the narration from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), it is mentioned that «اقرا باسم ربك» was revealed first. There is no contradiction between these two narrations because Allah the Exalted revealed «اقرأ باسم ربك» to His Messenger when he was in the cave of Hira. Then he returned home, and Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) covered him with a cloak and poured cold water over him, and in the house of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), «یا ایھا المدثر» was revealed to him. So there is no difference or contradiction between these two narrations.
