Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! ‘Abdul Muttalib was better for his people than you. He used to give them (camel) livers and humps to eat, while you are slaughtering them. He also said whatever else Allah willed him to say. When he was about to leave, he asked: What should I recite? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You should recite this: “O Allah! Save me from the evil of my own self and make me firm upon the most guided matter.” Then the man left. He had not accepted Islam. (After some time, he again came to your service.) He said: O Messenger of Allah! I had come to you before and requested you to teach me something, so you said: “O Allah! Save me from the evil of my own self and make me firm upon the most guided matter.” Now that I have accepted Islam, what should I say? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You should say: “O Allah! Save me from the evil of my own self and make me firm upon the most guided matter. O Allah! Forgive whatever I have done secretly or openly, whatever I have done by mistake, whatever I have done deliberately, and whatever I have done unknowingly.”
