Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Three men were walking when rain overtook them, so they entered a cave in a mountain. A rock fell upon them and blocked the way. So they said: ‘Call upon Allah by means of your most beloved deeds.’ One of them said: O Allah! You know that my parents were old and advanced in age. One day I came home in the evening and milked for both of them. When I came to them, they were both asleep. I did not like to wake them, nor did I like to give milk to my children before them. My children were crying at my feet, but I remained standing until morning came and they woke up, then I gave them to drink. O Allah! If You know that I did this hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then grant us relief and show us the sky. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A little relief appeared and they could see the sky.
The second person said: O Allah! You know that I had a cousin whom I loved intensely, as men love women. Once I sought her nearness, but she said: ‘No, not until you give me one hundred dinars.’ I strove for it and gathered the amount, then came to her. When I sat between her legs, she said: ‘O servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not break the seal unlawfully.’ So I left her. O Allah! If You know that I did this hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then grant us relief and show us the sky. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A piece of the rock moved and they could see the sky.
The third person said: O Allah! I hired a man for a specific measure of rice. When night came, I paid him his wages, but he did not take it and became angry with me. I took the measure of rice and started farming with it until it turned into cows and goats. After some time, that man came to me and said: ‘O servant of Allah! Fear Allah and do not wrong me in my wages.’ So I said to him: ‘Take these cows and their shepherd.’ He said: ‘Fear Allah and do not mock me.’ I said: ‘I am not mocking you. These are yours. If I wished, I could have given you only a measure of rice.’ O Allah! If You know that I did this hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then grant us relief. So the rock moved away from there and they came out.”
