أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عِيسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَمْرًا فَلْيَقُلِ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلا أَقْدِرُ ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلا أَعْلَمُ ، وَأَنْتَ عَلامُ الْغُيُوبِ . اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا لِلأَمْرِ الَّذِي يُرِيدُ خَيْرًا لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعِيشَتِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي ، فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي وَأَعِنِّي عَلَيْهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا لِلأَمْرِ الَّذِي يُرِيدُ شَرًّا لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعِيشَتِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي ، فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي ، ثُمَّ اقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ أَيْنَمَا كَانَ ، لا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلا بِاللَّهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: “When a person intends to do something, he should recite this supplication.” O Allah! I seek goodness from You according to Your knowledge, and I seek strength from You according to Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. Surely, You have power and I do not have power; You have knowledge and I do not have knowledge; You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah! If this matter is such and such—here the person should mention the name of the work he intends to do—if it is better for me in regard to my religion, my life, and my Hereafter, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and help me with it. And if this matter—here the person should mention the name of the work—is bad for me in regard to my life and my religion, then turn me away from it and grant me the ability to attain goodness wherever it may be. Nothing can happen without Your help.”
