Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): “There are some angels of Allah who are apart from those who record people’s deeds. They roam about on the roads, searching for the people of remembrance (dhikr). When they find some people who are remembering Allah, they call out to each other: ‘Come to your objective!’ Then they cover them with their wings up to the sky of the world. Their Lord asks them, although He knows better than them, the Lord says: ‘What are My servants saying?’ The angels reply: ‘They are declaring Your greatness, Your takbeer, Your purity, and Your praise.’ The Lord asks: ‘Have they seen Me?’ The angels reply: ‘No.’ The Lord asks: ‘If they had seen Me, what would have happened?’ The angels reply: ‘If they had seen You, they would have declared Your purity with even greater intensity, praised You more, and declared Your greatness more.’ The Lord asks: ‘What are they asking from Me?’ The angels reply: ‘They are asking You for Paradise.’ The Lord says: ‘Have they seen it?’ The angels reply: ‘No, by Allah! (O Lord, they have not seen it.)’ The Lord says: ‘If they had seen it, what would have happened?’ The angels reply: ‘If they had seen it, they would have desired it even more and would have sought it with greater intensity.’ The Lord says: ‘From what are they seeking refuge?’ The angels reply: ‘They are seeking refuge from Hell.’ The Lord asks: ‘Have they seen it?’ The angels reply: ‘No, by Allah! O our Lord, (they have not seen it).’ The Lord says: ‘If they had seen it, what would have happened?’ The angels reply: ‘If they had seen it, they would have fled from it even more, with greater intensity, and would have been more fearful of it.’ Then the Lord says to the angels: ‘I make you witnesses that I have forgiven these people.’ The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) says: One of the angels says: ‘Among them was such-and-such a person who was not one of them; he had come there for some work.’ The Lord says: ‘They are such people that whoever sits with them will not be deprived (of mercy).’
