Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah Almighty says: I am as My servant thinks of Me. When and wherever he remembers Me, I am there. If he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My heart. And if he remembers Me among people, I remember him in a group better than them. If he remembers Me by a span, I come closer to him by a span. If he comes walking towards Me, I come running towards him.”
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The Being of Allah Almighty is far above and exalted from anything of the attributes of creation being ascribed to Him, for nothing is like unto Him. These words (used in this narration) are according to the common idiom prevalent among people. Whoever remembers his Lord in solitude, whether by tongue or by action, through which he seeks nearness to his Lord, then Allah Almighty, out of His grace and bounty, mentions him in His dominion along with forgiveness. And whoever remembers his Lord in the presence of His servants, then Allah Almighty mentions that person with forgiveness before His close angels. He has accepted the remembrance of His servant (and mentions him along with it). And whoever draws near to his Lord by a span’s worth of obedience, then from the Lord’s side, kindness and mercy come closer to him by a cubit (the distance from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow). Whoever draws near to his Creator by a cubit’s worth of obedience, then from the Lord’s side, forgiveness comes closer to him by more than a fathom (the span of both outstretched arms). Whoever performs various good deeds with the speed of walking, then means, kindness, mercy, and forgiveness come towards him with such speed as running. So Allah Almighty is exalted and far above.
