Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me to recite the Qur'an. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Learn to recite the three Surahs that begin with "Alif Lam Ra." The man said: I have grown old, my tongue has become heavy, and my heart has become hard (meaning my memory is weak). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then learn the three Surahs that begin with "Ha Meem." The man said similar words. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a comprehensive Surah. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him Surah Az-Zalzalah, until when you reached this verse: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it." The man said: By the One Who has sent you with the truth, I will not care to learn anything more than this until I present myself before Allah, the Exalted. Tell me which deeds are obligatory upon me, I will do those deeds which I am able to do. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform the five prayers, fast in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, pay the Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil.
