Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us while we were learning recitation. He said: “All praise is due to Allah alone. The Book of Allah is one. Among you are those with white complexion and those with black complexion. Learn its recitation before people come who will recite it in such a way that they will set a price for it just as they set a price for their tongues (actually, the word here should be ‘goods’). And those people will hasten to take its compensation (i.e., in this world). They will not want to delay it (i.e., for the Hereafter).”
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narration has occurred in this way, but the original word is not (السنتهم, their tongues) but (السهم, their share/portion).
