Hadith 7221

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّ سَالِمَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ : " إِنَّمَا بَقَاؤُكُمْ فِيمَنْ سَلَفَ قَبْلَكُمْ كَمَا بَيْنَ صَلاةِ الْعَصْرِ إِلَى غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ أُعْطِيَ أَهْلُ التَّوْرَاةِ التَّوْرَاةَ ، فَعَمِلُوا بِهَا حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَصَفَ النَّهَارُ عَجَزُوا عَنْهَا ، فَأُعْطُوا قِيرَاطًا قِيرَاطًا ، وَأُعْطِيَ أَهْلُ الإِنْجِيلِ الإِنْجِيلَ ، فَعَمِلُوا بِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغُوا صَلاةَ الْعَصْرِ ، عَجَزُوا ، فَأُعْطُوا قِيرَاطًا قِيرَاطًا ، وَأُعْطِيتُمُ الْقُرْآنَ ، فَعَمِلْتُمْ بِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ أُعْطِيتُمْ قِيرَاطَيْنِ قِيرَاطَيْنِ ، قَالَ أَهْلُ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ : رَبَّنَا هَؤُلاءِ أَقَلُّ عَمَلا مِنَّا وَأَكْثَرُ أَجْرًا ، فَقَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى : هَلْ ظُلِمْتُمْ مِنْ أَجْرِكُمْ شَيْئًا ؟ فَقَالُوا : لا ، فَقَالَ : فَضْلِي أُوتِيهِ مَنْ أَشَاءُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying this while he was standing on the pulpit: "The duration of your existence compared to those who came before you is like the time between the Asr prayer and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah, and they acted upon it until half the day had passed, then they became weary regarding it, so each of them was given one qirat. The people of the Gospel were given the Gospel, and they acted upon it until they reached the time of Asr, then they became weary and each of them was given one qirat. You were given the Qur'an, and you acted upon it until the sun set, so you were given two qirats each. The people of the Torah and the people of the Gospel said: O our Lord! These people did less work than us, yet they received more reward. Allah the Exalted said: Did I wrong you in regard to your reward? They replied: No. So the Lord said: This is My grace, I bestow it upon whom I will."
