Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The horsemen of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) some people sent by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and they captured my paternal aunt and some other people. When they brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and made them stand before him, the woman said: O Messenger of Allah! The arrival of the envoy has been delayed, I am an old, elderly woman, I cannot do any work, please do me a favor, Allah will do you a favor. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: Who is your envoy? She replied: ‘Adi bin Hatim. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The one who has fled from Allah and His Messenger. Then the woman said: Please do me a favor. The woman narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned back, at that time a person was present at his side. The woman thinks that he was Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). That person said: O woman, ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a ride. The woman narrates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a ride, so he ordered it to be given to me. The woman narrates: Then I came to ‘Adi bin Hatim and I said: You have done such a thing that your father would not have done; you should go to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whether you go willingly or out of fear, because so-and-so person went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he obtained such-and-such thing from him. So-and-so person went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he obtained such-and-such thing. (‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and at that time there was a woman and some children (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) a child was present in the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When it was mentioned that this woman and these children were relatives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I realized that he is not a king like Kisra and Caesar. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: O ‘Adi bin Hatim, are you running away from saying that there is no deity except Allah? Is there any deity besides Allah? Are you running away from saying that Allah is the Greatest? Is there anything greater than Allah? The narrator says: So I accepted Islam. I saw the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he was very pleased. He said: Indeed, those who incurred [Allah’s] wrath are the Jews, and those who went astray are the Christians.
