Alqamah bin Wa'il narrates from his father: The Prophet (peace be upon him) granted him some land. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) along with him, saying, "You should give him that land." So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Let me ride behind you (on your animal)." He replied, "Do not ride behind kings." Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Give me your shoe." He replied, "Walk in the shade of the she-camel."
(The narrator states:) When Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph, I came to him. He seated me with him on the bed and kept conversing with me.
Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) states: At that time, I wished that I had seated him (Muawiyah) in front of me on my mount.
